NUR 333 Nurse as Leader

This course focuses on the development of leadership skills for professional nursing practice. The course explores the leadership role of the professional nurse through Nurse Leader interviews, current literature, theories, self-awareness, and professional development. Students collaborate with a Nurse leader to identify professional nursing leadership skills and competencies needed for complex healthcare system management processes to minimize risk of harm to patients and providers and ensure quality of healthcare systems. Students will complete a Leadership Development Project- Students will identify a Nurse Leader to engage in discussion and direct experiences related to leadership. The area of leadership should focus on one of the following: Education, Policy, or Management. In the development of the project, the student should utilize the following nursing leadership qualities: advanced clinical decision-making, leadership strategies, application of healthcare technology to improve patient care, and participation in interdisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes (The course requires a direct care experience).
In preparation for this course, students need to identify a Nurse Leader mentor that is willing to participate with the student to develop the Leadership Development Project. The leaders must hold a BSN degree or higher and currently be in a leadership role.
