SPN 215 Spanish for Heritage Speakers II

This class is the second part of a three-course sequence specifically for the needs of Spanish heritage speakers. The main goal is to improve their reading, writing, grammar and speaking skills, while fostering critical thinking and deepening their understanding and appreciation of Hispanic cultures in the world and within the United States. All classroom interaction occurs in Spanish. Required: Spanish native speaker or heritage speaker (grew up speaking Spanish at home); completion of SPN 214 or instructor's approval.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Understand and practice in context the present indicative, present subjunctive and the imperative moods. Improve narrative skills through the use of indicative preterite and imperfect.. Demonstrate an understanding of Magical Realism and its cultural importance. Write short argumentative essays expressing opinions. Analyze, compare and contrast practices, values, and beliefs of additional cultures of Latin America. Identify and analyze additional complex practices, values, and beliefs and the culturally and historically defined meanings of difference.
