SPN 214 Spanish for Heritage Speakers I

Part of a three-course sequence designed specifically for the needs of Spanish heritage speakers. The main goal is to improve their reading, writing, grammar and speaking skills, while deepending their understanding and appreciation of Hispanic cultures in the world and within the United States. All classroom interaction occurs in Spanish. Required: Spanish native speaker or heritage speaker (grew up speaking Spanish at home).

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Differentiate between colloquial and standard language. Develop and improve vocabulary and metalinguistic knowledge of English and Spanish. Demonstrate an ability to effectively present information to an audience in Spanish. Write formal essays using standard Spanish language. Analyze, compare and contrast practices, values, and beliefs of different cultures of Latin America. Identify and analyze complex practices, values, and beliefs and the culturally and historically defined meanings of difference.
