MCS 140 Civil Liberties and Multiculturalism

This course explores how the American judiciary has developed a body of law to ensure and preserve the civil rights and liberties of protected classes. These include race, religion, gender, class, age, sexual preference and the disabled. Students will learn about these legal protections and the judicial history behind them, while also examining various issues of American pluralism and diversity. Through class discussion of key landmark Supreme Court decisions students will apply analytical skills to interpret and understand the historical, cultural, and social impact of these precedents.
