SPE 216 Free Speech: Theories and Controversies

When are words dangerous? What should we be allowed to say? These are some of the questions we will attempt to answer while exploring the major theories concerning speech and society. We will also consider whether these perspectives can help solve contemporary controversies such as racist and sexist speech, obscenity and censorship.
