Educational Costs Waivers

If a law enforcement officer, correctional, or correctional probation officer is killed in the line of duty as specified in Florida Statutes 112.19; or a firefighter is killed in the line of duty as specified in Florida Statutes 112.191; or a teacher or school administrator is killed or injured and dies as a result of an unlawful and intentional act while he or she is engaged in the performance of teaching duties or school administrator duties or the motivation for such act is related in whole or in part to the fact that the individual is a teacher or school administrator as specified in Florida Statutes 112.1915, the State of Florida shall waive certain educational expenses that the child or spouse of the deceased law enforcement officer, correctional officer, correctional probation officer, or firefighter, or the child of a teacher or school administrator incurs while obtaining a career certificate, an undergraduate education or a postgraduate education. The amount waived by the state shall be an amount equal to the cost of tuition and matriculation and registration fees for a total of 120 credit hours. The child or spouse may attend a state career center, a state community college or a state university. The child or spouse may attend on either a full-time or part-time basis. The benefits provided to a child under these laws shall continue until the child's 25th birthday. The benefits provided to a spouse under these laws must commence within five years after the death occurs and entitlement shall continue until the tenth anniversary of that death.

Upon failure of any child or spouse benefited by the provisions of these laws to comply with the ordinary and minimum requirements of PHSC, both as to discipline and scholarships, the benefits listed shall be withdrawn and no further monies expended so long as such failure or delinquency continues.

Only students in good standing shall receive the benefits listed.
