HIST 246 Pre-Modern Korea

According to legend, the Korean people were born from the union of the son of the "Lord of Heaven" and a bear-woman, with a good measure of garlic and mugwort aiding the process. From these mythic origins, tracing roughly 2,000 years of Korean history, we will end with the forced opening of the Korean peninsula and people in the mid-19th century. The main objective of this class is to impart an understanding of the major social, cultural, political, and intellectual developments that occurred along the way.
