FREN 363 Representations of French Colonial History

The course is an exploration of various literary and cinematic representations of the French colonial history and its impact on the peoples of the Maghreb and West Africa. It examines narratives of war, dominion, racism, and collaboration. Films and literary texts examined include: Les Indigènes (Rachid Bouchareb); Le Camp de Thiaroye (Ousmene Sembene); Le Vieux Nègre et la Médaille (Ferdinand Oyono); and Meursault, contre-enquête (Kamel Daoud).
