2016-2017 Catalog

ENGL 274 Women Writers

We will study novels by Anglo American, African American, and Native American women writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Among the authors we will read are George Eliot, Kate Chopin, and Virginia Woolf; Harriet Jacobs, Nella Larsen, Zora Neale Hurston, and Alice Walker; Louise Erdrich and Leslie Marmon Silko. In addition to doing close readings of the novels, we will strive to understand the historical context and the cultural values in which the works are embedded and to which they respond.
