ARTH 368 Japanese Painting

A survey of Japanese painting with emphasis on the Heian through Tokugawa periods (10th-19th centuries). The transformative influences of Chinese culture and changing patronage groups (from courtly to zen/samurai to the merchant class) will inform our analysis of monochrome ink scrolls gold-leaf screens and ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Where possible we will consider the works in the architectural settings for which they were intended. Field trips to the L.A. County Museum of Art and other collections will be arranged.
