Mayville State University’s English programs prepare students for careers, life-long learning, citizenship, cultural enhancement, and problem solving. Core requirements provide a comprehensive overview of basic materials and a commitment to innovative technology-enriched education and learning relationships with community, employers, and society.
English Education majors must complete 36 hours of essential studies. The following Essential Studies courses require a minimum grade of "C": COMM 110, ENGL 110, ENGL 120 or ENGL 125, GEOG 103, MATH 103, and PSYC 111. ENGL 220 is a program requirement. These courses are pre-requisite courses to this major.
Students will also be required to complete a minor (varied in credits) or second major.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- SLO 1: Candidates respond critically to texts through written analyses, formatted for a collegiate, academic audience.
- SLO 2: Candidates read critically and showcase their understanding by isolating literary themes within and among readings.
- SLO 3: Candidates demonstrate knowledge of literary genres and effectively summarize, analyze, and synthesize among readings.
- SLO 4: Candidates prepare high school students to meet the English standards for high school graduation previously established by ESPB.

A cumulative GPA of 2.75 must be earned in teaching major, minor, and professional education courses. A grade of “C” or better is required for all professional and methods education courses, excluding EDUC 250 and EDUC 298 where a “B” is required.
