WW6. 156 Industrial Electricity

Provides the student with a hands-on survey of electricity/electronics. Topics include DC and AC electricity, Ohm's Law, series and parallel circuits, electrical sources, semiconductor electronics and motors. The student will have an opportunity to construct various electrical circuits and test the electrical parameters associated with them, thereby confirming theoretical predictions and gaining knowledge in the proper use of electrical test equipment.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Explain the physical components / devices that constitute a basic electrical circuit. Sketch and/or identify the electrical schematic symbols for at least 15 common electrical components used in industry. Sketch and / or recognize when electrical components are connected in series or parallel. Prototype (construct) simple series and parallel electrical circuits. Demonstrate by using a DMM to safely measure voltage, current, resistance and continuity. Recognize & identify fundamental circuit faults including open circuits and shorted circuits. Demonstrate by using a DMM to safely test for faulted circuit conditions including opened circuits and shorted circuits.
