MTH 256 Applied Differential Equations

An introductory course in differential equations for students majoring in mathematics, sciences, or engineering. Students are introduced to a variety of first and second-order differential equations that model changing quantities, including population dynamics, forced and unforced mechanical vibrations, and electrical charge in a simple circuit. The course includes both analytical and numerical solutions of typical first and second order differential equations, along with an introduction to the method of Laplace transforms for solving differential equations.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Write the appropriate differential equation to model a variety of problems and interpret the solution to the differential equation in the context of the given problem. Identify the necessary method and construct the analytical solution of typical ordinary differential equations. Develop at least one numerical method of solving first-order and second-order differential equations. Compute the Laplace transform of continuous and discontinuous functions. Apply the Laplace transform to solve a variety of differential equations, including those with discontinuous forcing terms.
