HE 220 Intro: Epidemiology/Health Data Analysis

Introduction to epidemiology and the use of elementary statistics for students in health-related studies. This course is designed to provide preparatory background for taking subsequent course in epidemiology and health data analysis offered by the Department of Public Health. This course introduces measure of disease frequency, analytical epidemiology, study designs, experimental design, and basic elements of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Examine the importance of biostatistics in public health and medical research. Differentiate between observational and experimental studies and recognize strengths and weaknesses of each type of study. Recognize the basic limitations on statistical procedures and know when and how to use them appropriately. Interpret statistical results, tables, and figures from the public health and medical literature. Distinguish and defend the use of appropriate statistical methods in current published public health research.
