Chemistry Minor

Description. Students who minor in Chemistry will learn fundamental introductory principles in general, organic and analytical chemistry. Individual course descriptions are provided under the course listings.

Rationale. The Chemistry minor is significant for students who wish to pursue the pre-health professions and major in another area. It is an important minor for students considering careers in which a full science major is not required, but college-level science experience is required.

Learning outcomes. Students will: 

• (Reasoning) Drawing appropriate scientific conclusions from evidence and experimental data.
  • Understand the role of creativity in problem solving
  • Apply scientific principles in gathering and interpreting scientific data
• (Knowledge) Acquiring broad fundamental concepts, theories, and principles in physical and biological sciences.
  • Use the primary scientific literature effectively in their own research
  • Describe the scientific progress that has led to their research project
• (Practical skills) Accruing hands-on laboratory and practical research skills, including emphasizing the role of quality assurance and objectivity in scientific data collection and how these relate to the system of professional ethics in science.
• (Communication) Developing competence in oral and written forms of scientific communication.

Requirements. To earn a Minor in Chemistry, students must earn no less than 19 credits in chemistry courses from the following list; students must take CHE 103 (or CHE 101 + 102), CHE 104 AND CHE 201 and then may chose thereafter.  It is highly recommended that students also take CHE 202. 

Students should have completed MAT 105 or higher and have 24 credits accumulated before taking this minor.  A placement test for beginning chemistry is required.  See the Minor Coordinator for details. 

A maximum of two courses can overlap with a student’s major, other minors or programs. 

Note: Students who earn the BS Degree in Forensic Science are NOT eligible to earn the Chemistry minor.  

Additional information. Students who enrolled for the first time at the College or selected this minor in September 2016 or thereafter must complete the minor in the form presented here. Students who enrolled prior to that date may choose the form shown here or the earlier version of the minor. A copy of the earlier version may be obtained in the 2015-16 Undergraduate Bulletin.
