CSP 73 "Get Out" of "La La Land": Race, Space, and Power in Los Angeles

Using Los Angeles as a case study, this course explores how race and racism shape urban spatial relations and how policies and practices related to demarcation, commodification, and valuation of urban space reinforce hierarchies of race and class. Colonialism, ghettoization, (re)development, and gentrification are some of the topics we will examine from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including critical theory, ethnic studies, geography, history, political science, sociology and urban planning. Our texts will include maps, photography, literature, film, music, and others. Community-based learning and research exercises including field trips and off-campus assignments will supplement this course.
