CSP 71 No Justice, No Peace: Resisting, Thinking, and Writing for the Sake of Justice

This class will examine recent examples of injustice covered by the national media and depicted in popular culture, like O.J.: Made in America, a documentary about the O.J. Simpson trial, the 13th, a documentary about the 13 Amendment and the prison industrial complex, the struggle to end the South Dakota Access Pipeline, and a surge of legislation at the state level to restrict the rights of the LGBTQIA community, with the aim of articulating how and why they depart from the dictates of justice and what the restoration of justice would require in each of these cases. This class will also ask students to identify organizations in Los Angeles and in their respective hometowns that are doing the work to restore justice for the issues that we discuss in class. By the second half of the semester, students will contribute weekly blog entries to the class' "Theory Meets Practice Project" website.
