ART 141 The Art of Africa, Asia and the Americas

This course offers an introduction to art beyond the Western tradition from North and South America, the West Indies, Africa and Asia. Students will examine art works and texts that offer a broad cross-cultural perspective on the rich and diverse aesthetic traditions, creative expression, rituals, myths and belief systems of non-Western cultures. Course content will include Pre-Columbian, Native American, Post-Colonial and Postmodern art, Tribal art from the African Diaspora, African-American folklore art, as well as art from the Taoist, Buddhist, and Islamic and Hindu traditions of the East.
