Computing the Grade Point Average

A student’s grade point average is calculated on the basis of earned credits, grades and the number of quality points assigned to each grade:

Grade Quality Points
per credit

Grade Quality Points
per credit

A 4.0 C+ 2.3
A- 3.7 C 2.0
B+ 3.3 C- 1.7
B 3.0 D 1.0
B- 2.7 F 0.0

To calculate the number of quality points earned in any course, multiply the number of credits listed for the course by the quality points of the final grade. For example, the grade of B in a 3-credit course earns a total of 9 quality points (i.e., 3 credits x 3 quality points for the grade of B).

To determine the cumulative grade point average, total the number of quality points earned in all courses; then, divide that number by the total number of graded credits.

For example:

PSY 101 A 4.0 x 3 = 12.0
ENG 101 C 2.0 x 3 = 6.0
MAT 103 B 3.0 x 3 = 9.0
SCI 103 A 4.0 x 3 = 12.0
HIS 101 F 0.0 x 3 = 0.0
PED 103 P - x - = -
Semester GPA = 39.0/15 = 2.6 15 39

PSY 101 A 4.0 x 3 = 12.0
PSY 103 B+ 3.3 x 3 = 9.9
ENG 102 C- 1.7 x 3 = 5.1
MAT 104 A 4.0 x 3 = 12.0
SCI 104 A- 3.7 x 3 = 11.1
HIS 102 C+ 2.3 x 3 = 6.9
PED 104 P - x - = -
Semester GPA = 45.0/15 = 3.0 15

Cumulative GPA = 84.0/30 = 2.8

The Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.8 is the total number of quality points (84.0) divided by the total number of graded credits (30).
