Why Study Geography?

Geography provides students with an understanding of the earth and the life upon it. The study of geography explores the development of various cultures, human responses to the environment, and environmental changes.

Students interested in a degree in Geography can begin their educational goals by pursuing the Liberal Arts and Science: Humanities and Social Science degree at RCC.

Occupational Objectives:

Students who wish to pursue a career in geography can continue their education by transferring to a four-year institution. Upon completion of their education students can obtain positions in the fields of national trade, business and other related areas.

Discipline Goals:

The geography discipline will provide students with the ability to understand the relationship human beings have with each other and with the environment. It will focus on the natural, social and global environment and the differences between the physical and cultural components of geography.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of courses in geography, students will be able to:

  • Recognize the essential components of the physical and social environment through the use of data tables and maps
  • Identify and describe the physical, demographic, cultural and social character of the major geographic realm
  • Describe and understand the world through the use of maps
  • Understand the use of geographic models as deductive devices
