Why Study Emergency Medical Services?
The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program prepares the student to treat out-of-hospital patients presenting with life-threatening illness or injuries to decrease morbidity and mortality. Successful completion of the Emergency Medical Services program enables the student to participate in the NYS Department of Health EMS Bureau and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic practical and written certification examinations.
Various requirements must be met before a candidate for the Emergency Medical Services program enrolls:
- Minimum age of 18 years
- Permission of the EMS Education Chair
- Successful Math, EMT, and Practical Skill screening
- Interview
- Placement in English 101 and Math 101 after Assessment
- A police record free of convictions or current charges (e.g. murder, manslaughter, assault, sexual abuse, theft, robbery, drug abuse, or sale of drugs, etc.)
- Maintain a minimum of a B average in each PAR paramedic course (e.g. PAR 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 206, 207)
- Maintain immunizations and physical exam records with Records and Registration

Occupational Objectives:
Graduates of the EMS AAS degree program are qualified to serve in a variety of job related settings: paramedic, educator, supervisor, Emergency Management, planner, consultant, manager, and director. However, if students decide to further their education at the baccalaureate level, additional general education courses will need to be completed at the transferring institution.

Program Goals:
The program will provide students with the specialized course work needed for careers in emergency medical services. Upon completion of the classroom, clinical and fieldwork requirements, students will be prepared to take the practical and written certification exams.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Analyze basic concepts of Anatomy and Physiology and apply it through clinical assessment and treatment of patients in their care
- Analyze basic concepts of Pathophysiology and apply it through clinical assessment and treatment of patients in their care
- Develop hands on experience in the EMS SimMan Labs in patient assessment and management of Medical and Trauma cases
- Demonstrate both Basic Life Support (BLS) skills and Advanced Life Support (ALS) skills necessary to treat and manage any type of medical or trauma emergency
- Develop a variety of skills related to learning core concepts including critical thinking and reasoning skills as well as problem solving
- Develop successful laboratory and field research skills
- Integrate elements of the biological, and physical sciences in the solutions of patient care problems
- Evaluate the interdisciplinary nature of core concepts in Emergency Medicine, Emergency Management, Disaster Management and other subject areas
