JAPN 340 Language in News Media and Advertising

This course focuses on current trends in Japanese language and society. By reading newspaper articles; listening to TV/radio news; and intensively studying vocabulary related to world affairs, social issues, and government, the student will be trained to grasp the critical information conveyed by these sources and to report accurately various facts, events, and thoughts orally and in writing. The student will also be introduced to the common practice of unorthodox usage of the language in advertisement, copy, and comic strips to develop, further, their comprehensive language skills. Given in alternate years.
