HIST 190 Capitalism

This course will take a historical look at the emergence and development of capitalism from the 16th century to the present. The course stresses capitalism’s global spread and interaction with other historical forces such as commercialization, urbanization, colonialism and imperialism, environmental and climate change, inequality, and social and economic instability. We will look at the emergence of various schools of thought on capitalism, such as Keynesianism, Marxism, liberalism, the Austrian School and its offshoots, and neoliberalism. We will end with a discussion on the future of capitalism, considering globalization, the rise of China, economic crisis, and the rise of nationalist and populist responses.
