CHIN 460 Translating Chinese I

This advanced level course will introduce students to the art, practice, and intercultural contexts of translating Chinese into English. The class will discuss the content, linguistic form, and cultural contexts of a variety of authentic examples of written Chinese, followed by practice in producing readable English translations. Original Chinese texts will include short stories, essays, and media. This course is open to both non-native and native speakers of Chinese who wish to develop their bilingual skills and intercultural literacy. Class discussion will be conducted in Mandarin, Chinese, and English. May be repeated once for credit.
