FRE 140 French /Francophone Women Writers in Translation

This course will analyze texts written by French and/or Francophone women writers in the contexts of their times, civilization, and culture. This course offers an overview of French and Francophone literature written by women throughout the centuries, with writers ranging from Marie de France, Mme de Lafayette, Mme de Stael, George Sand, Marguerite Duras, and Assia Djebar. We will examine the narrative techniques that each of these writers uses to address issues of gender, sexuality and identity. Conducted in English, with readings in French for majors. GS-VI. Prerequisite for majors: FRE 124.
