Freshman Requirements

Graduates of approved United States high schools are reviewed for admission to the University upon presentation of an official high school transcript and official ACT or SAT test scores, as well as an application for admission and the required application fee.  Graduates of non-approved high schools must present an official report of the General Education Development Test (GED). GED overall score requirement is 450 with a minimum of 410 on each exam for exams taken through fall 2013, with at least a 145 on each module and a total score of 580 for GED exams taken after January 2014.

In order to be considered for admission, freshmen applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • A cumulative high school grade point average of at least 2.0, an ACT composite score of at least 18 (or equivalent SAT), and completion of College Prep Core Requirements.

The North Dakota University System College Preparatory Core Requirements include the following:

        4 units of English
3 units of Mathematics (Algebra I and above)
        3 units of Laboratory Science
        3 units of Social Studies

These are required for unconditional admission.

  • Applicants who do not meet the ACT/SAT requirements listed above, but who have met the 13 college preparatory course requirements may be considered for unconditional admission if they have a balance of ACT/SAT scores and GPA as indicated below:

        3.00-4.00/ACT 15
        2.50-2.99/ACT 16
        2.25-2.49/ACT 17

These are considered guidelines and do not guarantee admission. Students with an ACT of 14 or below will not be admitted and referred to a NDUS two-year college.

  • Students who do not meet the guidelines listed above because they have not completed the 13 college preparatory course requirements or because they do not have the required combination of ACT/SAT scores and GPA, are still encouraged to apply. Their applications will be reviewed individually and more comprehensively. Such applicants may be admitted with conditions that will be determined based on their specific situations.

The following high school courses are strongly recommended:

  • Algebra II (advanced algebra)

  • 2 units of a single classical or modern language, including American Sign Language and Native American Languages.

Applicants should consult their school counselor or the Office of Admissions regarding acceptability of high school credits.
