Doctoral Program in Criminal Justice

The Doctoral Program in Criminal Justice of The Graduate Center City University of New York at John Jay College is designed to provide individuals with the theoretical background, practical knowledge, and research capability required for university teaching and research positions and to become leaders in criminal justice professions. Using the specialized resources of John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Graduate Center, the program draws on a nationally recognized faculty, a strategic geographic setting, and close working relationships with all components of the criminal justice system.

Students receive rigorous training in several core areas including criminological theory, criminal justice policy, social science research methods and statistics. They may also take courses in international/comparative criminal justice, or choose the Policy, Oversight & Administration Track (POA).

The program requires at least 60 credits of coursework with two comprehensive examinations. It culminates in a dissertation in the area of a student’s interest.

The nearly 80-member faculty of the Doctoral Program in Criminal Justice include professors trained in a wide range of academic disciplines, including anthropology, history, law, philosophy, political science, public administration, psychology, and sociology.

The doctoral program admits nine full-time and up to five part-time students each year, with a selection of courses offered in the late afternoon or evening. Full-time students are offered a full stipend (about $ 25,000) and full tuition for at least the first five years of their studies. Individuals who expect to remain employed in criminal justice or related fields but have already completed master’s degrees are encouraged to apply for part-time admission.
