UEP 230 Climate Justice: Theory and Practice

This course will cover the problem of climate change and the history and evolution of the climate justice movement. It will examine the organizing and policy tools used by advocates to advance climate justice. The course will begin with an exploration of climate change, the environmental and political factors that cause the climate to change, and why the issue matters to communities across the globe. The course will then look at the history and foundational concepts of climate justice with particular focus on how issues of race and class impact climate justice. Finally, the course will look at how the traditional environmental movement, the labor movement, and global movements advocate for climate justice and what priorities they advance. Key topics to be covered are: the intersection between race and the environment, the relationship between traditional environmental movements and the environmental justice movements, labor movements and the green economy, global solidarity movements.
