PSYC 351 Psycholinguistics

Traditional linguistics has revealed how complex and ambiguous natural language is. Despite this fact, people are able to effortlessly and accurately produce and understand language. At the crossroads of linguistics, psychology, and neuroscience, psycholinguistics is concerned with providing an explanation of how the human language processing system works. This course introduces students to the main goals, theories, and experimental methods of psycholinguistic research. We discuss the current state of our understanding of language learning and processing, as well as the experimental and analytical techniques that have been used to examine these issues.
