PHIL 243 Representation and Reality

This course will explore the relationships between the ways we describe the world and the nature of the world we describe. We will explore such questions as: Do different languages describe the world differently? Do different descriptions of the world correspond to different conceptions of it? Is the world a different place for those with different understandings of it? Could the world be other than it is, and how do we talk about these alternative possibilities? Are there limits to what we can express, and how do those limits correspond to the limits of what there is?
