MUSC 282 Introduction to North Indian Classical Music

North Indian (Hindustani) Classical Music is one of the most complete systems of musical expression found in the world today. Hindustani music is a vibrant contemporary art form that draws from an ancient historical tradition and rigorous theoretical structure to create performances that combine spontaneous creativity with virtuosic musicianship. In this course students will explore the musical and cultural aspects of this system through historical analysis and hands-on practice. Beginning with those elements of structure that Hindustani music shares with Western music (including the major scale) students will integrate theory practice and musicianship as part of a comprehensive introduction to North Indian music. The ability to read Western staff notation is highly recommended.
