MUSC 240 Music Production

Production skills are at the heart of every recording since the onset of music technology.  Since then, we cannot speak of something that is "the music itself" and another thing that is its production:  "music" is embedded in its production, regardless of style or genre.  Professional musicians are increasingly expected to have an understanding of audio engineering and to navigate digital audio workstations in order to record and produce polished tracks for themselves and others.  In this course, students will learn to understand and manage complex sound systems, including recording studios and live sound reinforcement, microphone and recording techniques, acoustics and signal flow/processing, mixing and mastering, and digital audio workstations platforms such as Digital Performer, Pro Tools, and Logic.  Through the hands-on production and analysis of state-of-the-art digital audio samples, student will gain skills to successfully navigate the private recording studios, large sound stages and control room environments in which the soundtracks for film, television, radio, and digital media are produced.
