2019-2020 Catalog

MUSC 108 European Vernacular Music

This course will survey the development of folk and popular music in Europe, including the music of the Balkans, the Baltic States, the Celtic region, the Iberian Peninsula, and the Mediterranean. We will examine how this music has served nationalist agendas, and how media and marketing have shaped the ways in which this music is understood. As most of this music involves dance, the study of dance will be an integral part of this course. Students must be prepared for intensive listening assignments, in and out of class. Prior musical experience or knowledge not required.
