ENGL 341 Race, Law, and Literature

This course interrogates the crucial role of the law in British imperial governance by reading colonial legislation and court proceedings alongside works of 19th and early 20th century literature. Doing this allows us to examine how dominant legal paradigms were disseminated in the era's cultural production and, in turn, how cultural ideals reflected in literature were materially implemented through the law. In addition, we will look at how literature often provided a viable means of contesting the normative terms of the law.
