DWA 240 Civil Society, Religion, and Revolutionary Movements

This course will examine why, how, and when voices of dissent turn into a full-scale revolutionary movement.  We will analyze how revolutionary practice has gone beyond the Leninist model to the mass model that came to be known as civil society.  What was civil society and how did it contribute to political change? What was the role of religion in this process? This course will examine the different expressions of civil society and how it brought together secular and faith communities in different social, political, and cultural contexts.
