BIO 110 Organisms on Earth

Principles and concepts of organismal structure and function, diversity, evolution, and ecology examined through case studies of organisms and their interactions with their environments. Emphasis will be placed on how organisms, from distinct biological groups, meet environmental challenges, such as: obtaining energy and nutrients, maintaining water and osmotic balances, reproducing, and finding a place to live. Students will learn to recognize and frame hypotheses about biological organisms and phenomena that can be tested (or falsified) by acquiring and analyzing appropriate evidence. Students will learn to acquire, analyze, and evaluate biological data through observation and experimentation in the laboratory and in the field. This course is designed for science majors and pre-health students; seniors may enroll by permission of instructor only. Includes one three-hour laboratory per week.
