HIST 207 African American History

This course introduces students to major issues in African American history from the earliest experiences of forced African migrants to North America to the black quest for freedom in the twentieth century United States. With our focus on significant demographic, institutional, cultural, and political developments within African American communities, we will explore key themes and watershed moments in the African American experience: from slavery to emancipation, from rural to urban, and from the civil rights and black power movements of the twentieth century to the ongoing struggle for social justice. By analyzing the dynamics of African American history in this way, we will better understand the relationship between the history and culture of black Americans and the history of the United States.
